hand drawings collage by Bojidar Kadiev, 1992

This is one of my first projects with the National Institute for Historic Landmarks in Plovdiv. The house is the largest building in the Old City of Plovdiv-the historic core of the city, part of the World Heritage List of UNESCO. It was a very ambitious enterprise, which aimed to preserve the structural integrity of the building as opposed to the commonly spread method at the time to demolish and re-build with steel, bricks, and concrete. The program was developed for a cultural center with meeting space and a small theater in the cellar, which has an independent approach from a major city artery. The project was complete by 1986 and construction started soon thereafter. Unfortunately due to lack of funds, the changed political system, and the ensuing recessions, the site stayed abandoned for 17 years. The house was condemned as a safety hazard and demolished in 2003.
